Topic: The Transnational Politics of Chinese Philanthropy: Implications for Global Civil Society

Abstract:

What does the internationalization of Chinese philanthropy mean for global civil society as well as for the People's Republic of China's own international role? Bertram's research conceptualizes the development of Chinese philanthropy as a process of multi-level legitimation, whereby regime actors and philanthropists simultaneously engage in efforts to legitimize their role in the eyes of domestic and international audiences alike.

Based on a multi-methods approach that combines ethnographic fieldwork in China with quantitative analysis of large news corpora and online fundraising data, Bertram explains the different drivers behind Chinese philanthropy's own overseas activities and shows both the potential and limitations of philanthropy legitimation under authoritarianism.
